Tax and Estate Planning and Employee Benefits Practice Areas

Katharine Jungkind focuses on advising clients about specialty tax matters. She understands that tax issues are a primary concern to her clients and she works with her clients to explain and address their concerns.  She understands that tax laws—local, state, and federal—can be confusing and frustrating, and she wants to help clients find a way through the mass of information to help solve their problems.

Her largest area of tax practice involves assisting clients with their employee benefit plans and programs, including retirement plans and welfare benefit plans. Her clients range from large corporations and governmental entities to small businesses and sole proprietorships.  In addition, she works with tax exempt organizations on organizational and compliance issues. She also works in the probate, estate planning, and elder care planning areas, and provides general representation to small businesses.

Ms. Jungkind can assist clients with:

  • Drafting qualified retirement plans, non-qualified retirement plans, beneficiary designations, forms, and employee communications regarding their benefit plans
  • Complying with federal employee benefit laws and regulations
  • Advising clients on Department of Labor and Internal Revenue Service requirements and changes to employee benefit programs
  • Obtaining nonprofit status for organizations from the Internal Revenue Service and complying with state registration requirements, and preparing required annual filings
  • Estate planning, elder care questions and planning and trusts and estate administration
  • General tax and tax-related issues

Ms. Jungkind obtained her bachelor of fine arts degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Memphis in 1984. She is a 1987 graduate of the University of Memphis School of Law and is licensed to practice in Tennessee. Having worked in the employee benefits area for her entire career, Ms. Jungkind has a broad overview of how tax laws have changed and will continue to change, and the effect those changes will have on businesses. She has attended numerous employee benefit seminars presented by the IRS and DOL officials. In addition, she has served on the panels of programs advising other lawyers on employee benefit compliance issues, including advising family law practitioners on how to comply with the rules on division of employee benefit plan assets in divorce.  She has served as an adjunct professor of legal methods at the University of Memphis School of Law.

As a member of the local, state, and national bar associations, she takes advantage of the information they provide regarding her areas of practice.

A former master gardener, she has presented seminars on native plants to various groups around Memphis and has volunteered at the Memphis Botanic Gardens and Lichterman Nature Center.  She enjoys training her dogs and riding her dressage horse.  She also enjoys reading books that are completely unrelated to the practice of law when she gets the opportunity.
