Katy C. Laster

Katy Laster concentrates her practice on employment law, commercial litigation, and family law. Ms. Laster has jury trial experience, and she has worked on cases through the appellate process. Ms. Laster's employment practice includes advising clients in areas such as:

  • The Family and Medical Leave Act
  • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act
  • The Americans with Disabilities Act
  • The Age Discrimination in Employment Act 
  • Wage and hour issues arising under the Fair Labor Standards Act
Ms. Laster also has experience handling contested matters on behalf of employers and employees in both state and federal courts, which includes work on complex matters such as trade secret claims and disputes regarding covenants not to compete and employee contracts generally.

Ms. Laster's commercial litigation experience encompasses work on a broad range of complex matters including:
  • Banking issues
  • Fiduciary duty and trust claims (including work on claims governed by ERISA and the Tennessee Uniform Prudent Investor Act)
  • Tennessee Securities Act claims
  • Trade secret claims
  • Tennessee Consumer Protection Act claims
  • Misrepresentation and fraud claims
  • Insurance coverage claims and
  • Construction contract disputes
Ms. Laster is admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Western and Middle Districts of Tennessee. A 2007 graduate of the University of Memphis' Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, she received the Cecil C. Humphreys Fellowship, the Dean's Award for Excellence (Best Memorandum), the CALI Excellence for the Future Award (Constitutional Law), and the Claude T. Coffman and the Amy E. Spain Memorial Scholarships.

In addition to her legal work, Ms. Laster was selected to serve as a member of the Memphis Bar Association's Leadership Forum. She also volunteers her time for various community organizations such as Dress for Success Memphis. She is a member of the Tennessee and Memphis Bar Associations.
